Honeywell Aerospace Using Proligent to simplify and accelerate
maintenance processes
"Averna's digitization initiatives are allowing us to make 21st Century process improvements to our test stations and contribute significantly to improve customer service and cost productivity. We have made great progress this year."

Joe Ritlop, Manager, Labs and Facilities, Honeywell Aerospace

Overview
Honeywell Aerospace Montreal’s plant wanted to upgrade three Manufacturing Test Stations in order to improve quality control testing performance, cost, execution speed, hardware compactness, and portability, while maintaining the high accuracy requirements of various manufacturer-specified functionality tests. To achieve these objectives, Honeywell used off-the-shelf software and hardware from National Instruments along with the Proligent test authoring and execution platform.

The Context
Honeywell International is a diversified technology and manufacturing leader, and its aerospace business is a leading global provider of integrated avionics, engines, systems and service solutions for aircraft manufacturers, airlines, business and general aviation, military, space and airport operations. Honeywell Aerospace MRO facilities in Montreal wanted to upgrade three Manufacturing Test Stations in order to improve quality control testing performance, cost, execution speed, hardware compactness, and portability, while maintaining the high accuracy requirements of various manufacturer-specified functionality tests.

The Solution
Using Proligent and NI off-the-shelf technologies, Honeywell obtained a multifunctional test system that can be used to perform qualification and acceptance level testing of manufactured avionics components involving electrical, thermal, vibration, and pressure tests. For example, test stations that used to be dedicated are now performed on a single bench test to test Electronic Limiting Units, Cabin Pressure Controllers, and Pneumatic Valves.

This approach enabled Honeywell to reach its objectives of increase test quality and reliability, decrease test execution time, minimizing training effort, centralizing test specifications and results while ensuring a payback in less then a year. The resulting test system has proven superior to the original test system in speed, cost, compactness, and portability while satisfying the accuracy and stability requirements of the mission-critical functionality tests.

Conclusion
The solution was an unqualified success as measured against Honeywell’s Success Metrics. In fact, Honeywell has selected this solution model as a “standard application” for future Manufacturing Test Station upgrades.
